Exposure Dependent Creolization in Language Dynamics Equation

چکیده
The purpose of this paper is to develop a new formalism of language dynamics so that creole may emerge. Thus far, we modified the transition probability of the dynamics so as to change in accordance with the distribution of population of each language at each generation, and in addition, we introduced a new parameter called exposure rate with which infants were exposed to other languages than mother tongues. Thus, we could observe creolization under limited conditions. In this paper, we revise the learning algorithm in our model, considering the amount of language input during the language acquisition period. Thus, the transition probability depends not only on the exposure rate but also on the amount of language input. With this model, we show that creolization occurs only when the influence of mother tongues and the socially dominant languages balance.

The Language Dynamics Equations of Population-Based Transition - A Scenario for Creolization
Children will develop their parental languages correctly, since language learners come to obtain the one which they contact most in the community. At the same time, children would be affected by other languages, the influence of which is proportional to the population of those languages. In this paper, we revise the foregoing evolutionary theory of language, that is differential equations of th...
متن کاملCreolization: Could Adults Really Have Done It All?
Creolization is the expansion of a simplified pidgin into a more complex language called a creole. Various theories have been proposed to explain this transition; most are attempts to explain who created the creole, adults or children, and refer to processes of first or second language acquisition. However, using traditional methods of investigation, this issue has been difficult to resolve. To...
متن کاملPrediction of Creole Emergence in Spatial Language Dynamics
Creole is a new born language emerging in most cases where language contact takes place. Simulating behaviors that creole communities are formed in some environments, we could contribute to actual proof of some linguistic theories concerning language acquisition. Thus far, a simulation study of the emergence of creoles has been reported in the mathematical framework. In this paper we introduce ...
متن کاملCreolization and admixture: Typology, feature pools, and second language acquisition
1 Proponents of a ’feature pool’ approach to creolization (e.g. Mufwene 2001, Aboh 2 Ansaldo 2006) have claimed that the emergence of the new grammar is driven by 3 the syntax-discourse prominence, markedness and frequency of available features, 4 with typological similarity or dissimilarity of the languages involved playing a cru5 cial role in the competition and selection process. This paper ...
